A Tudor Christmas

Children from classes O4/5, SK5, D6 and E6 enjoyed a visit to the Elizabethan House to help with the Christmas preparations. They learnt how to set the dining table for the Christmas Banquet, helped with the Master and Mistress’ wardrobe, practised two Tudor dances and also wrote beggars’ licences using a quill pen and ink.

In a workshop back in school, pupils learnt about the Tudor tradition of serving ‘subtleties’ (sugar and almond paste sculptures) and had a go at making their own creations using salt dough (2 parts plain flour to 1 part salt. Mix with water until pliable (not sticky) and bake in the oven at 140` until hard – 1.5 – 2 hours).

Henry VIII visits Martham Primary!

On Wednesday 23rd October, we were fortunate enough to have a member of the Royal family in school.  King Hal (Henry VIII) came to school for the day to work with classes O4/5, SK5, D6 and E6.

King Hal shared with us lots of information about the lives and times of the Tudors. He played musical instruments from the period, explained why people would be placed in the stocks and even led us through a Grand Jousting Tournament!

Lots of children and staff dressed up in costume which added to the experience.

We all had a fantastic time with King Hal and have learnt so much from the day.

World War II project in P4

In P4 we have been enjoying our World War II project.  Before half term the children built a Morrison Shelter in the classroom so they could experience what it was like to stay inside a cage.   During World War II people would sleep in these during the bombing raids if their garden wasn’t big enough for an Anderson Shelter.

We also made some wonderful Blitz pictures.  The children mixed colours to create their fire background then added silhouette buildings and search lights.

Thank you to all the parents who helped their children complete some really informative, well researched and presented homework.  It’s been great to hear the children share some of their families’ stories and talk so enthusiastically about the topic.
